Grandma’s Quilt

Grandma’s Quilt

Mismatched pieces –

a little of this and a little of that –

tiny rectangles of blue lilacs,

pale pink peonies,

blood red paisleys,

sunny yellow daisies floating in an orange sea

Ribbons of rectangles

hand-stitched together

meticulously, methodically

on the squeaky wooden frame stretching across the wide bedroom wall

Thin white thread

binding the pieces,

securing in the warmth

of heritage and memories,

family and love

So that on a frosty January evening

some great-great-grandchild

can snuggle down with a favorite worn book and steaming cocoa

under the ribbons of rectangles

to dream of a sunny summer field of yellow daisies and blue lilacs.
